🌱🎄Pomander Balls (Clove-Studded Oranges) – Traditional Christmas Decoration

🎄🍊It wouldn’t be Christmas without the warm, spiced fragrance of pomander balls filling your home. These aromatic oranges, pierced with cloves, are one of Grandma Sita’s favourite holiday decorating traditions. Pomanders add natural scent, colour, and a cosy touch to any festive setting. Hang your pomander from a Christmas tree branch, your front door, or above a fireplace, and let the festive aroma fill the room.

Freshly made, pomanders last about a week. By storing them in a cool place or refrigerating them at night, you can prolong their life. When they eventually lose their fragrance, they are fully compostable — a zero-waste Christmas decoration!

🌿 For an extra festive feel, pair them with pinecones, cinnamon sticks, dried cranberries, or twigs. These affordable, recyclable elements capture the cosiness of the season perfectly.

✂️ How to Make a Pomander
What you’ll need:
1 orange
Whole cloves
Ribbon
Scissors
Toothpick or the end of a biro
🧵 Step by Step
1. Prepare the Orange
Criss-cross a ribbon around your orange and tie it in a neat bow. This will allow you to hang your pomander later.
2. Insert the Cloves
Use a toothpick or the end of a biro to make small holes in the orange, then push a clove into each hole. Start with simple lines or patterns if you want a quicker design.
3. over the Orange
Continue studding cloves all over the orange, creating stripes, stars, or a fully covered design.

👵 Grandma Sita’s Tips
✔ The more cloves you use, the longer they’ll last and the stronger the fragrance.
✔ Add extra spices to the orange or ribbon decorations, such as star anise, cinnamon sticks, or cardamom pods, for an extra festive scent.
✔ Fresh pomanders: keep for up to 1 week at room temperature.
✔ Pickled or syrup-preserved pomanders: store in a cool, airtight jar and enjoy for up to 6 months.
