  • DID YOU KNOW…

In the Nordic countries the cross on the studenterhat is not a Christian symbol. It is modelled after the Maltese cross of the Order of Dannebrog.

The student hat came into use in Denmark in 1856 after inspiration from the first Nordic student meetings, which began in 1849. The original student hat from 1856 was black with a white silk cord, but in the 1880s the male students switched to using the current white student hat with burgundy ribbon, then called the summer hat. It was not until around 1930 that female students wore the white student hat with burgundy ribbon.

The student hat was previously used and worn as a symbol throughout higher education until the master’s degree was passed. Today, the hat is usually worn only through the time of the student parties and then put on the shelf.
