🔥 What Are the Fallas?
The Fallas (Falles in Valencian) is one of Spain’s most iconic festivals, celebrated every March in Valencia in honour of Saint Joseph. It combines art, satire, and community spirit through monumental sculptures that are ultimately burned in a spectacular finale.
Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2016), the festival reflects centuries of tradition and creativity.

🌱 From Simple Beginnings to Grand Celebrations
The origins of Fallas date back to the Middle Ages, when Valencian carpenters burned wooden structures (parots) used to hold candles during winter. As spring arrived, these were no longer needed and were burned to welcome the new season.
Over time, these wooden pieces evolved—dressed up, given human features, and transformed into satirical figures representing local personalities. These early creations became the first ninots.
Today, each neighbourhood creates elaborate Fallas monuments made of wood and papier-mâché, often filled with humour and social commentary. Around 800 monuments are displayed across the city from 15 to 19 March—before being set ablaze in a powerful act of renewal.

🤩 The Pardoned Ninots: Art That Lives On
Every year, two ninots are saved from the fire by public vote—these are the famous ninots indultats. They are preserved and exhibited in the Fallas Museum, forming a unique collection that dates back to 1934.
Grandma Sita especially loved discovering scenes full of everyday life and nostalgia, including:
• A charming grandmother’s kitchen (2015 – La cocina de la abuela)
• A humorous “sausage-style Vespa” for grannies (1958)
• A poetic old fisherman figure (1970)
• A tribute to Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla
Each piece captures a moment in time—blending humour, tradition, and artistic expression.

🎨 A Celebration of Art, Culture, and Community
Fallas is more than a festival—it’s a reflection of Valencian identity. From the casales falleros working all year to build monuments, to the communal meals (hello, authentic paella!), the celebration brings people together in a powerful way.

📆 If you’re planning a visit, the Fallas season runs from 1 to 19 March, with the main events taking place in the final days leading up to Saint Joseph’s Day.
