🚲♻️What can an old bicycle tyre, urban sports and a grandmother teach us about circular living? More than you might think.
After spending the last few days immersed in O Marisquiño, we’ve been thinking about what urban culture and action sports can teach us about circular living.
Every August, Vigo becomes a meeting point for riders, artists, families, visitors and urban culture enthusiasts. O Marisquiño brings them together through movement, creativity and community.
But urban culture is about more than sport. It’s about reinvention, resourcefulness and making the most of what we already have.
And perhaps that mindset can inspire us to rethink how we use materials, share knowledge and build a more circular future.
🛞 Flat Tyre? No Stress — Just Re-CYCLE It!
A flat tyre doesn’t have to be the end of the road. At Grandma Sita, we love giving old bicycle tyres and inner tubes a second life — turning them into belts, accessories, art and more.
What once rolled down the road can now wrap around your waist. That’s Re-CYCLING: cycling meets recycling, creativity meets circularity. And with BMX, MTB, Flatland and Big Air playing such an important role at O Marisquiño, perhaps there’s no better place to explore what Re-CYCLING could look like in urban culture. Ride it. Reuse it. Reimagine it. ♻️
👊🐙 Grandma Sita Rides into O Marisquiño
Grandma Sita always wears her pretty helmet for a safe ride — and if you’re a biker like her, O Marisquiño is the place to be! 🚲✨
O Marisquiño is one of Southern Europe’s leading Urban Culture and Action Sports Festivals. Every August, Vigo, Galicia, in north-west Spain, becomes a meeting point for action sports, urban culture, music and creativity.
The festival is free to attend, takes place outdoors and offers live streaming, bringing together riders, artists and audiences from around the world. From BMX, MTB and skateboarding to breaking and 3×3 basketball, O Marisquiño celebrates movement, creativity and community, with the unique backdrop of Vigo, Samil Beach and the Cíes Islands. 🌊🏔️

And this is precisely what makes us curious:
What if urban sports could inspire more circular habits too?

👵The Resource We Shouldn’t Waste: Intergenerational Knowledge
There is another kind of resource we don’t talk about enough: experience — and the connections it creates between generations.
This year, we also saw a powerful connection with the past at O Marisquiño: Samil’s historic skate half-pipe, a familiar part of Vigo’s skate culture, was brought back into use for a competition on Friday, shortly before its planned removal as part of the beach redevelopment.
One of the things we love about O Marisquiño is how naturally it brings different generations together around urban sports. At Samil, riders and fans share the space with families, beachgoers and seniors. Some come for the competitions; others simply stop to watch, film and enjoy the action. Not everyone comes for urban sports, but many become part of the experience. Perhaps that is one of O Marisquiño’s strengths: it doesn’t just bring urban sports to an audience — it brings different audiences into urban sports.
And as the first generations of skateboarders, BMX riders and cyclists get older, their stories, skills and experience become part of that culture too.
Experience should never be wasted. A trick can be passed on. A repair can be taught. A story can be shared. A passion can cross generations. That’s circularity too.
🌱 From Urban Culture to Circular Living
This is why we see so much potential in the connection between urban culture and sustainability. Festivals bring people together through experiences they remember.
What if those experiences also inspired us to repair more, reuse more, waste less and value what we already have? Because circular living doesn’t have to be perfect. It starts with simple questions: Can I repair this? Can I reuse it? Can it have another life? What can I learn from someone who has done this before me?
At Grandma Sita, we believe the answer is often yes.
🚶♂️Moving More Sustainably
And remember: for shorter journeys, walking, skateboarding or cycling can be healthy, affordable and space-efficient alternatives to driving.
They take up little space and have a very low environmental impact — a true win-win for people and the planet. 🌍
💚Nothing with Value Should Be Wasted
Not food. Not materials. Not traditions. Not experience. Maybe that’s one of the most important lessons urban culture can teach us. And perhaps the next great trick isn’t something completely new. Maybe it’s simply something worth passing on.
Could the next chapter be O Marisquiño 2027? 👀🚲♻️
